For decades, Tony O. Elumelu, CFR, has remained one of Africa’s most influential bankers, investors, and philanthropists, shaping the continent’s financial landscape through visionary leadership and an unwavering belief in entrepreneurship. Now, as he prepares to step down as Chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA) in line with corporate governance requirements, attention has shifted to the inevitable question, what is next?

For many observers, retirement from UBA’s boardroom is unlikely to signal a retreat from the public stage. Rather, it is expected to mark the beginning of another chapter in the remarkable journey of one of Africa’s foremost business leaders.

Elumelu’s influence extends far beyond UBA. As Chairman of Heirs Holdings, he oversees a diversified investment group with interests spanning power, energy, hospitality, healthcare, technology, financial services, and real estate across Africa. Industry watchers believe he is likely to devote even greater attention to expanding these investments and identifying new opportunities capable of transforming the continent’s economic fortunes.

There is also the Tony Elumelu Foundation, arguably Africa’s leading philanthropic platform dedicated to empowering entrepreneurs. Since its inception, the foundation has supported thousands of young business owners across all 54 African countries with funding, training, mentoring, and networking opportunities. Many expect Elumelu to deepen his commitment to entrepreneurship, further strengthening his legacy as one of Africa’s most influential champions of youth empowerment.

His passion for Africapitalism—the philosophy that Africa’s private sector must drive the continent’s economic and social development—is also expected to remain central to his engagements. Through policy advocacy, strategic investments, and thought leadership, Elumelu is likely to continue shaping conversations around inclusive growth, innovation, and sustainable development.

Beyond business and philanthropy, speculation persists that his post-UBA years could see him playing an even more prominent role in continental and global economic discourse, serving on international advisory boards, championing policy reforms, and mentoring the next generation of African corporate leaders.

Whatever path he ultimately chooses, one thing appears certain: Tony Elumelu’s retirement as UBA Chairman is not the closing of a remarkable career but the opening of a new phase defined by broader influence and deeper impact. For a man whose career has consistently been driven by innovation, enterprise, and a commitment to Africa’s progress, the next chapter promises to be every bit as compelling as the last.
