What younger generation should do after acquiring skills abroad — Gov Makinde

The Oyo state governor, Seyi Makinde has advised younger generations leaving the country to study abroad on what to do after achieving their aims abroad.

He noted that Nigerian youths abroad should come back to develop the economy of their country with the experience gained while abroad.

Makinde said this on Friday during the International Study Abroad Fair, (ISAF) 2025 held at The International Conference Center, Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.

The state governor declared that his government will continue to support educational advancement both locally and internationally as education remains one of the major pillars of his administration.

He maintained that his government has been doing a lot of things in the education sector towards improving primary, secondary and tertiary education in the state, adding that it also believes that foreign education can help the state achieve its vision of economic expansion and development.

Speaking on the topic ‘Harnessing international education experience for local economic development’, Makinde who was represented by the Oyo state chief of staff, Segun Ogunwuyi stated that youths who travelled abroad should ensure they earn a skill while away.

He stressed that it is a good thing to have youths studying abroad adding that knowledge and skills earned should be used later to build the economy of the state and country in general.

He further stated that such collaboration in support of foreign education will help place Oyo state on a global map.

He said “This collaboration is a great one because foreign education will enable our youths to earn global skills, so it’s an education that will take Oyo on a global map”

In an interview with Journalists, the Managing Director, TPSeal Education UK, Lady Tolu Eledan stressed that the fair was to promote global skills among Nigerian youths who want to further their study abroad.

Eleran added that the Fair is dedicated to providing expert guidance and comprehensive information for undergraduate and postgraduate students seeking admission to their preferred institutions.

She said that part of the strategic relationship formed in the first edition of the initiative in 2024, has yielded dividends for the organisation where about 100 Nigerian students benefited from the scholarship program of the initiative.

One of the speakers at the event, the Managing Director, African Newspapers of Nigeria, ANN PLC, publishers of the Tribune title, Mr Edward Dickson, stated that the event is not just about education but about building a society where everyone can enjoy life while it last.

He said “It is not unusual for Tribune to support this kind of initiative, because the founder of the Newspaper, Late Pa Obafemi Awolowo is widely known to support education throughout his life because he loves everything about education “

He advised participants at the event, to see it as a platform to bring out the best they can become in life.

Dickson said Nigerian students travelling abroad to study should have a mindset of giving back to the society after their return to Nigeria.

He said,“For us here who are students and want to further our education abroad, it is an opportunity for you to explore and earn more knowledge, but I will urge you to have a mindset of giving back to your society “
