What to do when traveling to Nigeria with expired passport

Published by

The Nigeria Immigration has explained what to do when traveling to Nigeria with an expired passport.

This was made public on the official X account formally (Twitter ) of the Nigeria Immigration Service on Saturday, May 4, 2024, in a tweet after a netizen asked the question.

Dr. Dípò Awójídé (@OgbeniDipo) asked on the page of the Immigration Service, ‘’Can we still travel to Nigeria from the UK with an expired Nigerian passport? Asking for a friend, tagging @nigimmigration.”

The Immigration service answered, ‘’Standard practice, especially as we constantly communicate with international airlines, states that a Nigerian with an expired passport should not be denied entry into his father/motherland (so long as he/she meets other relevant travel requirements). So to answer your question, sir, YES.”

Further answering the question, ‘’However, certain airlines are quite big on ensuring that passengers who board their flights possess VALID travel documents – inclusive of their international passports. Way forward? We’d suggest that your friend puts a call across to the airline to be sure flying with an expired Nigerian passport won’t be a problem before booking his/her flight’’.
