Children from infancy are enrolled in crèches because their parents have to work. Sometimes, one wonders what, aside from learning, makes these children eager to go to school every day of the week. Some pupils of Grace Land Schools, Akegilowo Area, Ilora, Oyo State, share with Aunty Yemi other activities that would not make them to miss school for a day.

Even if I do not feel like going to school, when I remember my proprietress’s jovial and motherly ways of relating with us, I would want to go. I love her. Every morning, after assembly, the proprietress would come to my class to see how we are faring after which she would sing for us, educate us and make everyone laugh before starting the day’s work.

Aside the eagerness to learn, there are two major reasons why I do not like to miss school. They are: my class teacher and the lunch break. My class teacher is amazing so I always want to be in school to attend her classes. Secondly, our lunch break is always fun time. It is a period I scream round the field, playing, without being punished.

I am always delighted to go to school because of morning devotion during assembly. Assembly time is my best time in school; I dance, clap, sing the National Anthem, do the march past and swing my hands while singing to enter my class.

I like going to school because of pocket money. My mummy gives me money for crunchy snacks like chin-chin on Saturdays and Sundays but on Mondays to Fridays, I collect money for other goodies. I won’t miss school because of my favourite snacks.

I am an assistant chapel prefect in my school so I have to be in school always for me to lead songs at the assembly. My position in the school makes it mandatory for me to be present in school every day. This is my second reason for going to school aside learning.

I always want to be in school because of my school uniform. My school has different wears for each day so I am always excited putting on each of these clothes because they make me look smart and cute, especially, our sportswear which we wear every Wednesday.

I always want to be in school because I like my class teacher a lot. Although she punishes me when I do wrong but I observed that she has been doing it with a heart of love. I like my teacher very much and feel her absence anytime the school is not on.

I don’t like missing school for a day because my school has arrangement for many sports/exercises. Although football is my favorite among all the sports, I love to participate in the various sporting activities. My parents do not allow me to play football at home so I have my freedom in school to play. For this reason, I love to go to school knowing that after some periods of learning we will play sports.
Pelumi Fehintola, 11 yrs old
Aside from going to school to learn, I also act drama. I am a member of the drama group of my school. I love acting. It is part of the reasons I am always eager to go to school.
Joy Akinniyi, 12 yrs old
What motivates me to go to school is my class teacher. I love her so much. There was no time I took ill that she wouldn’t come to my house to check on me. She is very caring and calm. My aunty has been part of my motivation to attend school every day.
