Edo State has recently reported one confirmed outbreak of Mpox and eight suspected cases of Cholera. Dr. Ojeifo Stephenson, the state Director of Public Health at the Ministry of Health, shared these details with Channels Television.

He noted that since January, the state government has been actively working to raise awareness and encourage residents to seek medical attention if they exhibit symptoms.

Dr. Stephenson explained that a total of 11 suspected cases of Mpox have been identified in the state.

Health teams are promptly mobilized upon receiving alerts about suspected cases to collect samples and conduct contact tracing. Out of the cases tested, eight were confirmed as reactive while the remaining were non-reactive.

The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has highlighted that children between the ages of 0 and 5 years are particularly affected by Mpox.

So far in 2024, Nigeria has recorded 48 confirmed cases of the disease, with the latest report indicating eight new cases across five states.

The increase in suspected cases has also been notable, with 57 new suspected cases reported in the most recent week, up from 25 the previous week.

This data reflects a broader concern as Mpox continues to spread, affecting a wide range of communities and emphasizing the need for ongoing public health interventions and awareness.
