The WEMA Hackaholics initiative has disclosed that it will award the best innovators in Africa through its start-up-focused tech competition, Hackaholics 6.0.
The event-themed “Staying Beyond Algorithm” started March 7th and brought together Nigeria’s brightest innovators from universities and tech communities to pitch their digital solutions designed to drive economic and social progress.
These innovators will pitch their Digi-Tech solutions designed to solve real-world problems and contribute to Africa’s economic and social progress.
The Sixth Edition of Hackathon is all about positioning Wema and supporting the country in its digital aspiration, and Wema deliberately celebrates its plans for the 80th anniversary of the financial institution founded on May 2nd 1945.
The initiative Hackaholics launched in 2019 is committed to innovation and transformation positioned for the future and asks questions of what is required for transformation in Nigeria to do well in the future.
The key element of that is providing a platform for young minds to express themselves through technology and look for solutions that can impact society.
According to Tunde Mabawonku, Executive Director of Retail and Digital, “Hackaholics come on with solutions that supported the country’s solution that has had an impact on people coming up with applications to help for early cancer detection solutions for transportation and health”.
He added that as a financial institution, we should put our money where our mouth is we have seen over the last few years a lot of emphasis on the creative economy.
“Excellent good impactful a lot of emphasis on shows is that support creativity, we also have to those investment in technology to lead us the creative industry that is striving in Nigeria and across the world. We are proud one of the leading lights of technology and the leading light in driving this transformation”.
Olusegun Adeniyi, the Chief Digital Officer, highlighted that the sixth edition seeks bold content that leverages transformative technologies to address pressing challenges across various sectors, particularly interest in areas of technology, also placing strong emphasis on user experience scalability.

Past winner Sofia Sadiq, whose mental health tech solution won the Women-Led Prize, credited Hackaholics for accelerating her startup’s growth.
