Speaker of the House of Representatives on Tuesday tasked its newly inaugurated tactical committee on Economic recession to tackle the current economic recession and return the country’s economy to the path of growth and stability.
This is coming just as the chairman of the committee, Hon. Bode Ayorinde promised that the committee would work in line with its mandate to help guide the country out of recession.
This came to fore at the inauguration of 16 member committee by the Speaker called on all stakeholders, notable economists, scholars, both foreign and local to put all hands on deck to assist the committee to achieve the desired mandate.
The Speaker however lamented that, “Successive governments failed to save during the period of oil boom in Nigeria until we are confronted with the realities of this economic recession”, stressing that “as a parliament, we are committed towards ensuring that the sufferings experienced by the ordinary Nigerians are alleviated”.
On his part, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Ayorinde said that the recession should be seen as an opportunity to rediscover ourselves, look back and identify our faults and our strengths so as to march forward with strong determination to come out of the recession and return the nation’s economy to the path of stability and sustainable growth.
Hon. Ayorinde also said that, “We shall therefore join hands with other relevant authorities to provide succor to Nigerian people. In legal parlance we shall prosecute the recession with the speed of light and incarcerate it to where it rightly belongs, so as to return our economy to the part of stability, growth and development.”
Formation of the committee, it would be recalled, was sequel to House resolution on the need for more proactive steps to abate the hardships being experienced by Nigerians as a result of the current economic recession.
