For nearly four years, a couple in Scotland, Michelle and John Wylie, were left puzzled by the appearance of a stranger in their wedding photographs, until the mystery guest was finally identified as a man who had mistakenly attended the wrong ceremony.
The couple tied the knot at the Carlton Hotel in Prestwick, South Ayrshire, on November 20, 2021, surrounded by family and friends or so they thought. It was only after receiving their wedding photos that they spotted a tall man in a dark suit, looking distinctly out of place.
According to the BBC, neither relatives, friends, nor venue staff could identify him, and even an appeal on social media yielded no answers at the time.
The mystery lingered until recently, when content creator Dazza shared the photos online. The post eventually reached the man in question: Andrew Hillhouse from Troon.
Hillhouse explained that he had mistakenly gone to the wrong hotel while rushing to attend another wedding two miles away. Believing he was in the right place, he quietly joined the ceremony. His suspicions were confirmed only when the bride walked down the aisle and he realised he had never met her.
“I couldn’t just walk out once it started, so I sat through it, trying to hunch down out of sight,” he recalled.

After the ceremony, he was inadvertently caught in group photos before slipping away with nothing more than a bottle of cola. He later rejoined the actual wedding he was meant to attend at the Great Western Hotel in Ayr.
The revelation amused the Wylies, who said they had often joked about the “mystery guest.” Michelle and Hillhouse have since connected on Facebook and even met in person.
“I couldn’t stop laughing when we finally found out who he was,” Michelle said.
Hillhouse, too, found humour in the situation: “It was easier to crash a wedding than I thought I was in and out like an assassin.”
