The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Kano State chapter has made an appeal to the stakeholders in the state to join in sensitising the public to register under the electronic registration system ahead of the 2023 elections.
Making the assertion on Tuesday, the Kano Resident Electoral Commissioner Professor Shehu Riskuwa, who was represented by the Administrative Secretary, Jibril Musa, at a stakeholders meeting organised by the commission.
According to him, the commission has taken steps towards resolving the issue of congestion by creating 2,148 more polling units in the state to make a total of 11,222.
While responding to questions on voter apathy, Musa explained that some of the reasons for it include among others, congestion at the polling units and lack of security during the voting process.
He said, “There are two purposes for this meeting. Firstly, it is to acquaint the stakeholders with the polling units that we have recently created for Kano State and to give them soft copies of the 2,148 polling units created and the integrated copies of 11,222 copies.
“Happily for Kano, the polling units are now fully-fledged, they are now substantive. We don’t have any baby units or any voting points for now.
“The second reason and the most important reason for coming today is to inform the stakeholders on the continued voter registration which started on the 28th of June, with the online registration.
“At the same time again is to inform them that the physical registration will commence on the 19th of July and the commission is in the final stages of concluding its preparation and to ensure that the CVR commences as scheduled.”
However, the chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Abdullahi Abbas expressed dissatisfaction with the low turnout in Kano despite its mega population adding that the state government will set up committees to sensitise the public on the need to come out massively to register.
“So the government is disturbed and the party is not happy with the turnout. So we are doing everything possible to mobilise people to go and do the needful,” the state APC chairman said.
“As far as we are concerned, we are not happy with the way this is happening in Kano. As you know, we have the highest population in the country. But unfortunately, if you compare us with others in terms of registration of voters the situation is disturbing.”
He added that “The state government is doing its best. On Saturday, we are going to inaugurate committees for sensitization of voters across the state. These committees will include the Emirate council, the Ulama, youths, women, civil servants and others.”
