Local security personnel, otherwise known as vigilante, in Ishiborr Igoli Ogoja Community, in Cross River State, on Wednesday arrested two suspected electric transformer cable vandals in the community and handed them over to the police in the area.
Speaking to journalists, one of the vigilantes, who did not want his name in print, narrated how the suspects were nabbed, lamenting the rising wave of crime in the locality.
“When this our festival wanted to start, the community here in Ishibori, where we have Igoli, the five communities selected five persons each to mount a security guard, because the security threats are too much, people are victims of insecurity incidents almost on a daily basis.
“As we speak we are looking into the case of three victims of gun shots at Maryland Hotels, who were shot and looted of their phones and whose perpetrators are now in the police net. Yesterday, an indomie seller was shot dead in a robbery operation while trying to explain he had no money with him,” he narrated.
The source also narrated the process that led to the arrest of the two suspected electric transformer cable Vandals.
“This morning we got information that some men were burning cables and removing the cuppers from it in a nearby bush. When we got there, they had already burnt all the cables. We arrested them, took them to the community and they have involved the police”, the source disclosed.
The source also added that the suspects “are non Crossriverians and are from the South-East but are aided by some suspected indigenous members of the community”.
“The notorious man that is buying those cables is from Igbo, here they call him doctor. They even attempted bribing us to set them free, but they have failed”, he further disclosed.
As at the time of this report, the Police public Relations Officer in Cross River, DSP Irene Ugbo, said she was yet to receive signals from that Division.
“Definitely before 1 o’clock pm, I should be able to get such information, if the information is true. But for now, I have not. It could be true.” She said.
The Ogoja area is said to be experiencing raising cases of theft and armed robbery, especially during this period of New yam festivals.
