Sweden’s newly appointed health minister, Elisabet Lann, faced a tumultuous start to her tenure after collapsing during a press conference on Tuesday at the start of the new parliamentary year of 2025-2026.
Lann, moments before, had outlined her vision for improving the country’s healthcare system, emphasising the need to address long waiting times and strengthen government control.
After receiving assistance from security personnel and party officials, the Swedish health minister returned to the event room, attributing her collapse to a drop in blood sugar levels.
“This was not exactly a normal Tuesday, and this is what can happen when you have a blood sugar drop,” She said.
However, it was not clear to the people present at the event whether Lann required or got any adequate medical treatment instantly, though she did not appear to be injured. The press conference was abruptly cancelled after the incident.
Despite the interruption, the Swedish health minister’s message on healthcare reform remained clear. According to Euractiv, it was reported that Lann told reporters that the country’s healthcare system is of high quality, but the long queues need to be addressed.
“Swedish healthcare is of high quality; the main issue is the long waiting times. We must transition to equitable healthcare. It is clear that we must strengthen government control. It is not worthy of a welfare state that so many people are waiting for healthcare,” she added
