The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Police Command of Nigeria Police Force, has confirmed the electrocution of a suspected vandal, Mr Muktar Rabiu, while attempting to steal components from a transformer on November 28, 2024.
In a statement issued to newsmen on Monday by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu, was quoted as saying: “In a striking incident that underscores the ongoing battle against vandalism in the Federal Capital Territory, the FCT Police apprehended a suspect, Muktar Rabiu, during a routine patrol on Christ the King Road in Gwagwalada on 21/11/24. Mr Rabiu was found in possession of high-voltage electricity cables, which authorities believe were stolen from the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).
This time, however, karma intervened. On 28/11/2024, just a few weeks after his community service, Mr Rabiu suffered severe electrocution while attempting to dismantle the electrical apparatus, leaving him critically injured. He is now receiving medical treatment in a hospital, and upon recovery, he will face new charges for his repeat offence.
The FCT Police Command has reiterated its unwavering commitment to protecting critical infrastructure and has issued a stern warning against acts of vandalism and theft of public utilities. Such actions not only jeopardise lives but also disrupt essential services that communities rely on.
In light of these events, the police encourage citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest station or through the Command’s emergency lines. Community participation is vital in the fight against vandalism, ensuring a safer environment for all.”
