The United States Mission in Nigeria has warned that Nigerians seeking to obtain U.S. visas for the primary purpose of giving birth in America, also known as “birth tourism”, will be denied entry.
In a post shared on Monday via its official X handle, @USinNigeria, the mission stated unequivocally that using a visa with the intent of securing American citizenship for a child through birth on U.S. soil is a violation of visa policy.
“Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will have U.S. citizenship is not permitted,” the message read.
“Consular officers will deny your visa application if they have reason to believe this is your intent.”
The post, which is part of a wider public awareness campaign tagged with hashtags #VisaWiseTravelSmart and #USVisa, included a graphic reiterating the warning: “We will deny your visa if we believe your primary purpose of travel is to give birth in the United States to get U.S. citizenship for your child. This is not permitted.”
The U.S. government has increasingly tightened scrutiny of visa applications to prevent misuse and ensure applicants comply with immigration laws.
The latest advisory emphasises the U.S. State Department’s commitment to curbing deliberate attempts to exploit the country’s birthright citizenship policy.
