US: What to know about new car, $20,000 Slate Pickup

Slate Auto, a new EV company backed by Jeff Bezos, has just revealed its first vehicle: the Slate Pickup. It’s simple, affordable, and designed for DIY customization.

The truck starts at $27,500, but with the federal tax credit, the price drops to just $20,000. That makes it one of the cheapest electric pickups on the market.

It’s also incredibly minimal. The base model, called the “Blank Slate,” comes with two seats, no touchscreen, no stereo, and no power windows. There’s only one paint option—grey.

Instead of a fancy infotainment system, you get a phone mount and USB charging. Want more? You can add it yourself. Slate is offering 100+ accessories you can install on your own.

There are options to turn the truck into an SUV with extra seats, or go open-air with special kits. You can add screens, speakers, bumpers, racks, and even power window kits.

The truck runs on a 52.7 kWh battery with about 150 miles of range. You can upgrade to 84.3 kWh for 240 miles. Charging to 80% takes around 30 minutes at a fast charger.

It’s not the fastest EV—0 to 60 in 8 seconds, top speed 90 mph—but it’s enough for everyday driving. Power is rated at 201 HP and 195 lb-ft of torque.

Even though it’s simple, it still meets 2027 safety standards. It comes with automatic emergency braking and a backup camera (which displays on the dash).

Slate says it’s targeting buyers who want function over flash. If you’re into customization, or just want an affordable EV for city driving, this could be your truck.
