Legionnaires’ is a type of pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacteria. A milder form of the illness, known as Pontiac fever, can also occur, with flu-like symptoms.
How does it spread?
The bacteria spread when people inhale mist or vapour containing the bacteria. Common sources include cooling towers, hot tubs, decorative fountains, plumbing systems, and large air-conditioning units. It can also occasionally be found in contaminated soil used for gardening.
Symptoms
Symptoms usually appear two to ten days after exposure and include:
Headache
Muscle pain
Shortness of breath
Cough
Fever
These symptoms can resemble other respiratory illnesses such as COVID-19 or the flu. Diagnosis requires a test ordered by a medical professional.
Who is at risk?
Older adults, people with chronic medical conditions, those with weakened immune systems, and smokers are more vulnerable. Healthy individuals are less likely to develop serious illness from exposure.
Treatment
Legionnaires’ disease is treatable with antibiotics, but many cases require hospital care. Health officials urge anyone experiencing symptoms especially after recent travel, use of hot tubs, or hospital stays to speak to a doctor and report any possible exposure.
