US President Donald Trump on Friday said a suspect had been arrested in connection with the killing of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk after a massive manhunt.
“Somebody very close to him turned him in,” Trump told Fox News in a live studio interview.
“The person was involved with law enforcement, but was a person of faith, a minister, and brought him to a US Marshal who was fantastic.
“They drove into the police headquarters, and he’s there now.”
He added: “We have the person that we think is the person we’re looking for.”
Kirk, 31, who was known for rallying youth support for Trump, was shot dead on Wednesday during an appearance at a Utah university.
Authorities said the shooter fired a single fatal shot from a rooftop about 200 yards away, striking Kirk in the neck.
Video footage showed a figure running across the roof, leaping down and fleeing towards a wooded area near the campus. Investigators later recovered a high-powered bolt-action rifle in that location.
Images released Thursday showed the suspect dressed in Converse shoes, a black baseball cap, dark sunglasses and jeans, with a long-sleeved top featuring an American flag design.
According to police, hundreds of agents from 20 law enforcement agencies took part in the operation that led to the arrest.
