US warns citizens to keep low profile in Nigeria

The United States has advised its citizens anxious to travel to Nigeria to review such a plan while it further cautioned those within the latter country to keep a low profile.

The statement on the US Embassy in Nigeria website, a security advisory dated January 3, 2020, equally advised US citizens to review and alter travel routes and times.

The advisory is a precautionary measure to forestall attacks on its citizens by sympathisers for Iran following last Friday killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in a drone airstrike.

The statement read in part: “Due to recent world events, U.S. citizens should review their personal security measures. While we have no specific threat information, it is prudent to remind ourselves of the following personal security actions to follow on a regular basis.

“Actions to take: Be aware of your surroundings; keep a low profile; avoid crowds and demonstrations; exercise caution when walking or driving at night; carry proper identification; review your personal security plans and monitor local media for updates.”

Tribune Online checks revealed that the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has since placed his men on red alert following the killings of the Iranian General.

The death of General Soleimani has sparked reactions across the globe. In Nigeria, members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN have staged a protest to condemn the killing.

On Sunday, three Americans were killed in a terror attack in Kenya.

The Americans, a US service member and two civilian contractors working for the Defense Department, were killed in the attack carried out by Al-Shabaab.
