Cedric Simpson, a district judge in Michigan, United States, was surprised after a man with a suspended driver’s license joined a court Zoom call while driving.
The 44-year-old man, identified as Corey Harris, to the surprise of the judge, appeared on the Zoom call from the driver’s seat of his car.
In the trending footage on social media, the judge, who could not understand the rationale behind Harris’ action, inquired, “Mr. Harris, are you driving?” to which the defendant affirmed, saying, “Actually, I’m pulling into my doctor’s office. So just give me one second, I am parking right now.”
After Harris parked his car, the judge, who revealed that he was violating the law, said, “So maybe I don’t understand something. This is a driving with a suspended license [case],” the judge said to Mr. Harris’ attorney. “And he was just driving. And he didn’t have a license. He is suspended.”
Although Harris’ attorney tried to explain the situation and asked for an adjustment of the case, it turned into the deaf ear of the judge who continued, “No, I’m looking at his record. He doesn’t have a license. I don’t even know why he would do that.”
Judge Simpson subsequently revoked Harris’s bond and ordered him to surrender to the local county jail by evening. He said, “The defendant’s bond is revoked in this matter and the defendant is turning himself into Washington County Jail by 6 p.m. today. Failure to turn himself in will result in a bench warrant with no bond.”
Reacting to the judge’s declaration, Harris said, “Oh my God.”
