The US Embassy in Damascus, which halted operations in 2012, on Monday, released a warning that the “security situation in Syria continues to be volatile and unpredictable, with armed conflict and terrorism widespread throughout the country.”
The embassy disclosed this on X, urging US citizens to “depart Syria if possible,” adding that those unable to leave should “develop contingency plans for emergency situations and be prepared to shelter in place for extended periods.”
American officials have confirmed ongoing engagement with prominent rebel factions working to establish a transitional government after the fall of former president Bashar Assad’s regime. However, the future direction of US-Syrian relations remains unclear.
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the most prominent of the rebel coalitions, has ties to al-Qaeda and remains designated as a terrorist organization by both the US and the European Union.
Its leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, widely known by the alias Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, continues to be the subject of a $10 million bounty offered by the United States.
The embassy emphasised that the US government “is unable to provide any routine or emergency consular services to US citizens in Syria.”
It urged those needing immediate assistance to reach out to the US Embassy in the country they plan to enter.
Additionally, the embassy advised Americans in Syria to be “prepared to shelter in place should the situation deteriorate” and to ensure they have all necessary travel documents ready.
