Tesla owner, Elon Musk, has sparked controversy with a viral poll on X, asking users whether the United States Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which he is leading, should audit the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
As of the time of this report, the poll cited by Tribune Online had drawn almost two million responses, with more than 90 per cent of participants supporting the move.
Poll results showed 51 per cent of respondents answered “yes,” while 41 per cent selected “F yes,” and 8 per cent voted “no.”
The initiative aligns with Musk’s broader efforts to reform federal agencies through DOGE, which he has been leading since being appointed a “special government employee” by President Donald Trump.
According to its website, DOGE aims to “decentralize the narrative around government spending, giving power back to the people to hold government entities accountable for their financial decisions.”
DOGE has already taken control of key financial operations, including the Treasury Department’s payment system, which handles Social Security and Medicare disbursements.
The organization claims to have saved the federal government $1 billion per day by freezing hiring, eliminating diversity initiatives, and halting payments to foreign organizations.
Musk’s call for an IRS audit follows his ongoing criticism of federal tax policies, including his opposition to government spending and the Direct File program, a free tax filing initiative. If pursued, DOGE’s scrutiny of the IRS could heighten concerns over the agency’s funding and enforcement role.
