The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has attracted nothing less than N5 billion in the last one year, from both local and international donors for research activities in the university.
The university is also set to hold this year’s research conference and fair which will last three days beginning from Wednesday, August 21 through Friday, August 23rd at the Jelili Omotola Hall in the university.
The chairman of the 2019 conference planning committee and former deputy provost of the university’s College of Medicine, Idi-Araba, Professor Abayomi Okanlawon, said this, on Friday, at a pre-event media briefing held at the university’s Senate House with the secretary of the committee, Mr Abayomi Oshinowo, in attendance.
According to him, the bulk of the money is from international donors and the research activities cover various fields of human endeavours.

He said the university was able to attract the funds due to what he called its strong commitment to the provision of a problem- solved based research activities in medicine, pharmacy, science and technology, humanity, information and communication technology, law, liberal arts and other fields.
Speaking on the forthcoming conference, which is the 14th in the series and with a theme, “Automation and Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities for the 21st Century Research and Development,”, Professor Okanlawon said the essence of the annual event is to provide a platform for collaboration between academia and captains of industry on socio-economic issues that could help impact the education sector and the economy at large.
He said over 200 research papers would be showcase by participants, majority of whom are postgraduate students, at the event, adding that the previous works have yielded (and still yielding) positive results.
He noted that while Dr Dere Awosika, an independent executive director, Access Bank Plc, would give a keynote address, Mr Afolabi Oladele, who is the former group executive director of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation ( NNPC), would deliver a paper at a plenary session.
