The University of Calabar (UNICAL) is preparing to host the 26th Annual International Conference of the African Council for Communication Education (ACCE) for its Nigeria chapter from 21 to 24 October 2025. The conference, titled “Communication and Indigenous Knowledge Systems in the Era of AI, Big Data, and Cultural Transformation,” aims to bring together scholars, media professionals, and policymakers from Africa and beyond.
Organised by the Department of Mass Communication at UNICAL, the event will focus on preserving and adapting Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) amid rapid digital changes. Key topics of discussion will include journalism, broadcasting, media ethics, public relations, advertising, and development communication.
Dr Lawrence Ekwok, Chairman of the Conference Organising Committee, emphasised the conference’s significance, stating, “This conference will serve as a vital platform for scholars and industry leaders to examine how indigenous knowledge can thrive alongside emerging technologies such as AI, Big Data, and Virtual Reality.”
The ACCE invites researchers to submit abstracts for presentation at the conference, with submissions due by 24 August 2025. Early-bird registration is available until 30 May 2025, providing participants with the opportunity to engage in networking and discussions on the future of IKS within Africa’s communication sector.

Interested participants are encouraged to submit abstracts on various sub-themes, including journalism, public relations, advertising, and political communication. Abstracts, which should not exceed 250 words, must be sent to accenigeriaconferences@gmail.com by the 24 August deadline.
Dr Ibituru Pepple, National Secretary of the ACCE, highlighted the importance of the conference, stating, “This event will encourage attendees to critically consider how to protect and adapt indigenous communication systems within contemporary contexts.”
With 14 sub-themes, including media ethics, broadcasting studies, and science communication, the conference will cover a wide range of topics. Discussions will address long-standing issues related to the marginalisation of IKS and propose strategies for its integration into Africa’s communication framework.
As Nigeria and other African countries strive to balance technological progress with cultural conservation, the conference at UNICAL is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping policy and academic discussions on the integration of indigenous knowledge in the digital era.
