UNIBEN bans use of hot plates, ring boilers in hostels

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has announced a ban on the use of hot plates, ring boilers, and gas cookers in its hostels as part of efforts to manage rising energy costs.

This directive was communicated through a circular signed by the university’s Registrar, Ademola Bobola, and obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday.

According to the circular, any student found violating this ban will face rustication.

The prohibition comes in the wake of an electricity crisis that recently affected the university, triggered by a significant increase in the institution’s monthly electricity bill from N88 million to N250 million by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).

The dispute over the billing led to the disconnection of power to both campuses of the university, resulting in a power outage that persisted for weeks.

This prompted students to stage a protest on July 3, 2024, leading the university’s Senate to temporarily close the school to prevent further unrest.

As the university prepares to reopen on Monday, the Registrar emphasises that students must adhere to the new regulations regarding the supply, distribution, and use of electricity on campus.

Additionally, students are required to settle any outstanding levies, with proof of payment being necessary for eligibility to sit for exams.

The circular also warned students against engaging in unruly behaviour, unauthorised assemblies, or demonstrations within the university premises, urging them to maintain good conduct at all times.
