In a bid to unlock the vast potential of Africa’s youths, the UNESCO Institute for African Culture and International Understanding, on Wednesday, empowered young creative artists with skills in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The skill acquisition programme was aimed to equip talented young artists with essential skills to preserve and promote Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.
The workshop focused on Adire, a traditional textile art peculiar to the Abeokuta people, teaching young artists how to create beautiful bags using this craft.
Director of the UNESCO institute, Professor Emeritus Peter Okebukola, stressed the need to empower young creative artists through intensive training to promote creativity as well as make them self-reliant.
According to him, by providing skill acquisition opportunities, the institute aims to contribute to the growth of the creative industry, promote cultural diversity, and drive socio-economic development.
He said: “This workshop is part of our efforts to promote African culture, creativity, and innovation. We believe that empowering young creative artists will contribute to the development of the creative industry in Nigeria and beyond.”
Okebukola added: “You are the future of Nigeria and Africa’s creative industry, and we are proud and committed to playing vital roles in your development.”
The participants learned creative techniques, cultural heritage, and entrepreneurship skills from experienced mentors.
Programme Officer at the institute, Olutola Amos commended Okebukola for his tireless efforts in implementing the UNESCO 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of Diversity of Cultural Expressions.
She said the convention highlights the importance of passing on cultural knowledge to future generations, which is crucial for community development.
Her words: “In line with this, our Skill Acquisition Programmes for Young Creative Artists aim to equip young creatives with essential skills to preserve and promote our cultural heritage.”
She, however, urged all young artists to embrace these opportunities with passion and dedication, as acquiring skills will be vital to their success and survival in the creative industry.
