Tesco is facing backlash from customers after announcing an increase in the price of its popular meal deal, with some shoppers vowing to stop buying it altogether.
The deal, which offers a meal such as a salad or sandwich, a drink, and a snack at a discounted rate, will cost more from Thursday for both Clubcard and non-Clubcard holders.
According to Manchester Evening News, Clubcard members will now pay £3.85, up from £3.60, while the price for non-Clubcard shoppers will rise from £4 to £4.25.
Tesco’s premium meal deal will also see an increase, moving from £5 to £5.50 for Clubcard members, and from £5.50 to £6 for those without.
The announcement has sparked strong reactions online, with some customers branding the hike as unfair. On Reddit, one shopper wrote: “I will be boycotting the meal deal from [Tesco] when this hike occurs.” Another added: “That’s it, I’m legit done buying these now.”
A different user commented: “Everybody should refuse to buy these when you could have a week’s lunch for a fiver.”
Similar sentiments appeared on the Manchester Evening News Facebook page, where Jason Clifford wrote: “Will not be buying them again.” Another reader, Kyle Spencer, added: “Everything that once was a deal no longer is.”
However, not all shoppers expressed disappointment. Some argued that the offer remains affordable compared to other options. Marlene Whitehead wrote: “That’s still good value,” while Peter Collins noted: “It’s actually still very good value compared to buying the items separately eg., Costa coffee on its own would be roughly £2.60.”
Despite the controversy, the meal deal continues to offer savings compared to buying items individually. Currently, the most popular combination — Tesco Chicken Club sandwich, Tesco Egg Protein Pot, and a 500ml Coca-Cola — costs £6.50 when bought separately. Under the new prices, Clubcard holders would still save £2.65, while non-Clubcard customers would save £2.25.
