UK raises visa, ETA fees in major immigration reform

The United Kingdom has officially implemented new immigration reforms, introducing higher costs and stricter requirements for visa applications and Electronic Travel Authorisations (ETAs).

The changes, which took effect on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, were announced by the UK Home Office.

They aim to refine the immigration system, reduce reliance on taxpayer funding, and enhance border security.

According to The Pan-Atlantic Kompass, the reforms come with a notable increase in visa and ETA fees.

From Wednesday, visa fees have gone up across all categories—including work, study, family, and visit visas. The increases range from 5% to 13% and are said to be designed “to offset operational costs and improve immigration services.”

Here are some of the updated visa fees:

Skilled Worker Visa: Now £1,160 (previously £1,084)

Student Visa: £524 (up from £490)

Standard Visitor Visa (up to 2 years): £475 (up from £432)

Long-Term Visitor Visa (up to 10 years): £1,059 (from £963)

Spouse Visa (out-of-country): £1,938 (up from £1,846)

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR): £3,029 per applicant (previously lower)

Applicants are still required to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which remains a substantial added cost.

It currently stands at £3,105 for out-of-country spouse visas and £2,587.50 for in-country applications.

These hikes could place financial pressure on families, students, and small businesses depending on international talent.

The cost of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) has also risen. Previously £10, it now stands at £16, reflecting a 60% increase.

This change affects visa-exempt visitors—including those from the United States, Canada, and most European Union countries—who require an ETA for short stays (up to six months) or transits through the UK.

The ETA, which is valid for two years and allows multiple entries, can be obtained through the UK ETA app or the GOV.UK website.

Additionally, the minimum salary threshold for Skilled Worker visas has increased to £25,000, also effective from April 9, 2025.
