The Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale, and experts from different parts of the world have stressed the need to apply mathematical modellings in solving problems faced in Africa.
Speaking during the opening ceremony of a 5-day International Conference and Advanced workshop on modelling and simulation of complex systems organised by the University of Ibadan Postgraduate College on Monday, Adebowale noted that the conference is meant to address national problems and the world in general.
He further stated that mathematical modelling and simulation can be used in addressing problems, including inequalities in the health system, climate change among others, adding that mathematics is turning to a theoretical subject which can be applied to impact society.
“There is no doubt that africa faces a lot of challenges myriad of challenges ranging from inequalities in our health system, climate changes and others, what we used to know before is the traditional models, mathematics simulation and modeling is coming into it , perhaps mathematics can be a compass in addressing some of these problems because of its complexity and that is why mathematics is turning from a theoretical subject to subject that can be applied and have impact in the society,” Prof Adebowale noted.
In his speech, Provost, Post Graduate College, University of Ibadan, Professor Ayodele Ogunjuyigbe, explained that the conference is aimed at bringing together different people from the field of mathematics and technology in a bid to come up with research works to solve problems.
He added that the event is also meant to impact knowledge in students, adding that the workshop is also meant to enhance capacity development of the students and career researchers.
Speaking with Journalists, Director, National Mathematics Centre, Abuja, NMC Professor Promise Mebine, stated that mathematics is the solution to many problems facing the world, ranging from disease control, pollution among others.
He bemoaned that mathematics is around but citizens of the country doesn’t see the need to use mathematics in solving problems.
Mathematics is all around but the problem is how we use mathematics to solve problems like other continents in the world.
In his remarks, Professor Clement Onime, of the International Center For Theoretical Physics, Italy, noted that there is rise in the need for mathematical modelling simulations of complex systems.
He added that the event will help remodel health issues, remodel transportation adding that data annexed from mathematical modelling can be use for the betterment and development of the society.
