President Donald Trump has announced a temporary suspension of tariffs on Mexico, stating that the decision was made “as an accommodation, and out of respect for” the country’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum.
“Our relationship has been a very good one, and we are working hard, together, on the border, both in terms of stopping illegal aliens from entering the United States and, likewise, stopping fentanyl,” Trump wrote in a post on X.
“Thank you to President Sheinbaum for your hard work and cooperation!” he added.

The suspension comes just days after the US imposed tariffs on goods entering from Mexico.
However, Trump emphasised that it is only temporary, lasting until April 2, and will apply only to goods covered under the trade agreement between the US, Mexico, and Canada.
A Canadian government source told the BBC that Ottawa, which has also faced tariffs from the Trump administration, expects a similar exemption.
This marks the second time in two days that the US president has softened his stance on tariffs.
The stock market reacted negatively to the initial tariff announcement, with fears of an escalating trade conflict contributing to the decline.
