SOKOTO State governor, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, has commended the management of the African Newspapers of Nigeria (ANN) Plc, publishers of the Tribune titles for being steadfast and committed to national unity.
He stated this in Sokoto when the management of the ANN Plc, led by the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief, Mr Edward Dickson, presented to him a letter of nomination for an award to be bestowed on him and 14 other eminent Nigerians on December 10, at the MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos. The award is part of celebrations marking the paper’s 70th year anniversary.
The governor praised the newspaper for not only being relevant in the industry in terms of accurate reportage, and also for not missing in the market for a day.
“I am moved by your comments that you as a company and the family of our late sage, Obafemi Awolowo, recognise what we are doing here.
“It is not just that, but for the Tribune newspaper, I am delighted.

“Let me briefly say something about the late sage. He was known as a genuine leader who contributed to the development of the country and the Western Region.
“The free education policy in the western part of the country is what makes that part remain where it is today.
“For the family of Awolowo to endorse me as a recipient of this award, signed by our mother, Dr Awolowo Dosunmu, I feel honoured.
“This award is not just for me and my team, but for the entire people of Sokoto State. The people of the state would not forget today and will celebrate it.
“I dedicate the award to civil servants in the state who have been contributing a certain percentage of their salaries to the educational development of the state,” he added.
Earlier, Mr Dickson had commended Governor Tambuwal for his efforts at improving the lives of the people of the state.
He described the award to be conferred on the governor as well deserved, adding that “among the present public officials in the country today, we find you worthy.
“We did not just follow your work as a governor, we also followed you when you were Speaker of the House of Representatives.”
“For being outstanding sir, the Obafemi Awolowo family and the Tribune newspapers decide to celebrate you and give you this award.
“It will also interest you that Tribune does not just give awards but gives to who deserves it. This is why this letter is jointly signed by the Awolowo family and my humble self,” he added.
