Trenchard Hall to host book launch in honour of late journalist, Olu Makinde

The iconic Trenchard Hall at the University of Ibadan will be the venue for the launch of a book commemorating the 10th anniversary of the passing of renowned journalist, Olu Makinde.

Makinde, who passed away on February 15, 2015, at his home in Ado Ekiti, is being honoured with a new book titled “Olu Makinde: Master of His Game”, written by his son, Tade Makinde II.

Dr. Yemi Farounbi, the Chairman of the Planning Committee and former Nigerian Ambassador to the Philippines, expressed his excitement about being involved in this meaningful project. “He was more than a friend to me and many others,” Farounbi said, highlighting the profound impact Makinde had on those around him.

Olu Makinde, a distinguished columnist with Nigerian Tribune from the late 1990s until the death of his wife, Princess Margaret Makinde, in 2007, withdrew from his writing career after her passing. He later relocated to his hometown, where he spent his final years.

Princess Aderonke Adedoja, Chairperson of the ARA Foundation, has played a key role in organising the event. She shared her excitement about being part of the book launch.

“I am just happy to help the family honour their father. From what I’ve learned, he was an exceptional journalist. We trust that the event on February 16, 2025, will be a remarkable celebration,” she said.

Tade Makinde, the author, formerly led the entertainment desk at the Tribune for many years. His first book, Fela Anikulapo Kuti: Bruised. Battered. Beloved, is available online, while his upcoming work will mark his debut in print.
