A travel agent, 38-year-old Jamiu Oyebanjo, who allegedly defrauded a man of N700, 000 on the pretext of buying flight ticket for him, was on Monday charged before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Oyebanjo, whose address was not given, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and fraud.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Tedunjaye Kolade, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Sept. 19, 2016 at No. 51, Abina St., Lagos Island.
According to him, the accused collected the money from the complainant, Alhaji Rahmon Adu, with a promise to buy a travel ticket for him.
“The accused collected the money and failed to buy the ticket as promised; instead he converted the money to personal use.”
The offences contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 314 stipulates 15 years imprisonment for obtaining credit by false pretence.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Magistrate, Mr P. A. Adekumaiya, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
He said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The case was adjourned until May 31 for mention.
