A 25-year-old trader, Christopher Cyril, who allegedly hit a woman with a stone on the eye, was on Wednesday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
The accused, a resident of Alade Estate, Iju, Lagos, is standing trial on a charge of assault, to which he pleaded not guilty.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Kenrich Nomayo told the court that the accused committed the offence on Dec. 1, 2017, at Fagba Bus Stop, Iju Road, Ikeja.
Nomayo said that the accused saw her friend, Mariam Asabi, hawking milk and Milo, and decided to pick a sachet of milk without paying.
He said that when the complainant, Asabi, told Cyril to return the sachet of milk he took, the accused refused and threatened to open it.
The prosecutor said that the complainant then snatched the milk from the accused and started running.
He said that when Asabi turned back to see if the accused was chasing her, he threw a stone at her, which hit her in the left eye.
“When Cyril noticed her left eye was bleeding, he fled the scene but was apprehended by some pedestrians.
“The complainant reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested for questioning, ” Nomayo said.
The offence contravenes Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section prescribes a three-year jail term for a person guilty of assault.
The Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje, granted the accused bail in the sum N20,000 with one surety in like sum.
Kubeinje adjourned the case until till Jan. 25 for a mention.
