In this article, Tribune Online highlights the most competitive courses for 2026.

Medicine and Surgery

Medicine and Surgery ranked the most competitive course in 2026 and is consistently the first choice for thousands of UTME candidates in Nigeria due to its prestige, job security, and excellent career prospects.

However, admission is highly competitive because the number of applicants far exceeds the limited number of spaces available at accredited medical schools. So, to gain admission, prospective students must have at least five O’Level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, choose the correct UTME subject combination, score exceptionally high in JAMB, and perform well in the university’s Post-UTME screening to meet the departmental cut-off mark.

Law

Law continues to rank among the most competitive courses in 2026 due to its prestige and wide range of career opportunities.

Beyond becoming a legal practitioner, graduates can build careers in the judiciary, corporate organisations, government agencies, international organisations, diplomacy, and politics.

The limited admission quota approved by the Council of Legal Education means universities admit only a fraction of qualified applicants each year. Candidates seeking admission must have at least five O’Level credits, including English Language and Literature in English, obtain a competitive UTME score, and perform strongly in the institution’s screening exercise.

Pharmacy

Pharmacy also remains one of the most competitive courses in 2026 because it combines healthcare with scientific research and offers diverse career opportunities in hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, research institutes, regulatory agencies, and community pharmacies.

The course is highly regulated, and only a limited number of universities have full accreditation to train pharmacists, making admission extremely competitive.

Prospective students must obtain five O’Level credits, including English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, choose the correct UTME subject combination, achieve a high JAMB score, and satisfy the university’s admission requirements during the Post-UTME screening for the universities that offer Post-UTME.

Nursing

Nursing has become one of the top courses in 2026 because of the increasing demand for qualified healthcare professionals both in Nigeria and abroad.

The profession offers excellent career stability, opportunities for international employment, and competitive salaries, making it highly attractive to UTME candidates each year.

In addition, Nigeria has a limited number of accredited nursing programmes compared to the large number of applicants, which pushes admission requirements higher.

Meanwhile, to gain admission, candidates must have at least five O’Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. They are also expected to score highly in the UTME and meet the departmental cut-off mark set by their chosen university.

Computer Science

Computer Science has experienced tremendous growth and is now one of the most competitive courses in 2026 because of Nigeria’s rapidly expanding digital economy. The increasing demand for software developers, cybersecurity professionals, artificial intelligence specialists, data analysts, and cloud computing experts has encouraged more students to pursue the course. Graduates also have access to remote international jobs and freelance opportunities that pay in foreign currencies.

Therefore, to secure admission, candidates need five O’Level credits, including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, and other relevant science subjects, alongside an excellent UTME score and strong Post-UTME performance.

Engineering

Engineering remains one of the most competitive courses, particularly disciplines such as Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Petroleum, Chemical, and Computer Engineering.

These programmes continue to attract thousands of applicants because engineers are needed across construction, manufacturing, telecommunications, energy, transportation, and technology sectors.

Although economic conditions fluctuate, engineering remains a respected profession with long-term career prospects.

Admission typically requires five O’Level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and one other science subject. Applicants must also meet the required UTME score and departmental cut-off mark set by their preferred university.

Medical Laboratory Science

Medical Laboratory Science has become popular, making it one of the most competitive courses in 2026. Medical laboratory scientists play a critical role in diagnosing diseases by conducting laboratory tests that guide doctors in treating patients.

Growing awareness of healthcare careers, coupled with increased demand in hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, and research institutions, has contributed to the course’s competitiveness. Candidates are expected to possess five O’Level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, achieve a high UTME score, and perform well in the university’s admission screening.

Accounting

Accounting remains among the most competitive courses because it provides graduates with versatile career opportunities in banking, auditing, taxation, financial consulting, government agencies, multinational companies, and entrepreneurship.

The profession also offers globally recognised certifications such as ICAN, ACCA, and CPA, making it attractive to students seeking long-term career growth.

Since many universities receive far more applications than available spaces, admission is highly competitive.

Prospective students need at least five O’Level credits, including English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and other relevant commercial or social science subjects, as well as a strong UTME score and successful Post-UTME performance.

Nonetheless, students who are interested in these programmes need to prepare thoroughly for UTME, meet O’Level requirements, and monitor official JAMB admission guidance. So, strong scores, correct subject combinations, and timely post-UTME preparation significantly improve admission chances.
