Hausa people, just like their counterparts (Yorubas) too have different types of tribal marks that serves as an identification or tells you more about a person. These marks are done a few days after a child’s birth. I know you are curious, just like I was, when I first asked question about this.Â
But don’t bother asking, I’ve got you covered with a some of the tribal marks in Hausa land below:
1. Lekanci
The Lekanci tribal mark is drawn from the head to the cheek. This mark is not too deep; it’s usually almost twenty lines altogether on the face. It is common to ‘Lekayewa’ clan of Argungu in Kebbi state, North-west Nigeria.
2. Mami
Mami is a vertical line, mostly seven on each cheek and one on the forehead. It is common among the Kanuri people of Mami dialect — who originated from Sayfawa.
3. Susa’na
Susa’na is a four vertical line mark drawn on the face not too deeply. The Kanuri tribe in Borno state are fond of it and it is done by ordinary indigenes who do not belong to any political or traditional class.
4. Rijiya
Rijiya is a Hausa horizontal mark across the cheeks. The actual number varies depending on the region, beliefs and most especially the family who intend to do it.
5. Gobirci
Gobirci is a mark used in distinguishing the Hausas from an ancient kingdom called “Gobir ” now found in Zamfara and Sokoto. It consists of multiple lines that lead to the mouth.
