Top 5 Nigerian rappers of all time

The top Nigerian rappers of all time are artists whose music is still very well appreciated even after death. There are many of them, but we present just the top five in this article. They are possibly your favourite rappers. Let’s get to find out: 

1. Dagrin

Oladapo Olaitan Olaonipekun, popularly known as “Dagrin,” was a prominent rapper who achieved a lot within a short time. He was born on 25 October 1984 in Ogun state, southwest Nigeria. His first album, “Still On The Matter,” and his second, C.E.O. (Chief Executive Omota), were released in 2006 and 2009, respectively. 

Dagrin worked with many artists, such as Omawumi, Bigiano, Terry G, Konga, Chudy K, and Omo Baba, to mention a few. He is highly regarded as one of the top Nigerian rappers of all time. He is credited with paving the way for Indigenous rap style in Nigeria. His mixture of Yoruba language and pidgin made him unique. Dagrin died on 22 April 2010.   

2. Olamide

Olamide Gbenga Adedeji, popularly known as “Olamide” and  “Baddo,” is regarded as one of the most successful indigenous Nigerian rappers ever. He was born on 15 March in Bariga, Lagos. His first single, “Eni Duro,” was dropped in 2010, and then he released his first album in 2011 titled “Rapsodi.” Ever since then, Olamide has been releasing hits with about ten albums. He has worked with Wizkid, 9ice, Reminisce, D’banj, I.D Canada and many more. Baddo is acknowledged for being influential and inspirational to other artists. 

3. M.I

M.I birth name is Jude Lemfani Abaga. He was born on 4 October 1981 in Jos, Plateau state. He is rated as one of the top rappers in Nigeria and Africa. He first came into the limelight after releasing his single, “ Crowd Mentality,” in 2006. He went on to produce many hit songs and won awards. Many rap artistes look up to M.I.; he is an inspiration.

4. Phyno

Chibuzo Nelson Azubuike, known as “Phyno,” is a professional Nigerian rapper born on 9 October 1986 in Enugu state but a native of Anambra state. He ventured into music in 2003 and released his first album in 2014 but started recording in 2012. His single “Ghost Mode” was a success; it was recorded in Igbo and pidgin. He has featured artistes such as Olamide, Omawumi, Timaya, Flavour, Ice Prince and Timaya. 

5. Vector

Olanrewaju Ogunmefun, popularly known as Vector. He was born on 7 August 1984 in Lagos. In 2009, Vector released a single called “Shayo” — it gave him prominence in the music industry. Afterwards, he continued to release albums and mixtapes. He’s a well-celebrated rapper who is appreciated for his lyrics and for being an excellent freestyle rapper.
