The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has unveiled a new ‘national unity fabric’ as part of her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).

The fabric, which is set to be worn across the country for the Independence Day celebrations on October 1st, emerged from a competition aimed at empowering young Nigerians and promoting national cohesion.

At a ceremony held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, the First Lady awarded N25 million to 25-year-old Miss Mofinyinfoluwa Bamidele, the winner of the #OneNigeria/UnityFabric competition, which drew 111 entries.

Bamidele’s design was selected by a panel of experts led by renowned fashion icon Princess Zainab Abba Folawiyo and international textile designer Banke Kuku.

“Today, my heart is filled with joy as we have just witnessed the unveiling of the #OneNigeria/UnityFabric, the announcement of the winner of the competition, and the presentation of the prize ceremony.

“I say big congratulations to Miss Bamidele Mufiyinfoluwa. She did quite a fantastic job,” the First Lady said during her keynote address.

She explained that the concept of a national unity fabric was inspired by her visit to Zimbabwe in December 2023, where she was struck by their similar initiative.

“I believe this concept is a unifying one, where we can infuse our cultural diversity and break down tribal barriers to identify as a people of one nation,” she said.

The competition, which targeted youths between the ages of 15 and 25, was launched in February 2024, and entries closed on June 30.

A selection panel, including members of the Governing Board of the RHI, undertook a rigorous process to choose the winning design.

The First Lady emphasised that this effort would not only promote unity but also stimulate local industries.

“The fabric will be mass-produced by local manufacturers – Sunflag Nigeria Limited in Lagos and BBY Multitrade Limited in Kano – to stimulate local industries, create jobs, and boost the economy,” she announced.

Mrs. Tinubu also praised all participants, encouraging them to continue pursuing their creative passions.

“I applaud each one of you for your contribution. However, we can only have one winner, but I urge you not to relent in expressing your creativity, imagination, and nurturing your dreams and passion,” she added.
