The Labour Party (LP) has urged the federal government to prioritize improving the welfare of Nigerians.

The party’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, made this statement in response to the recent stampedes that took place across the country.

Reports indicate that stampedes in Oyo, Anambra, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) resulted in the deaths of over 50 people, including children, during the distribution of year-end palliatives.

In a statement on Monday, Ibrahim noted that many Nigerians are resorting to risky endeavors to survive due to the rising cost of living.

He stated, “The bottom line is that there is hunger in the land. It is only poverty that drives some Nigerians to scoop fuel from accident scenes, leading to infernos that result in countless casualties. This has happened several times over the past year.”

He highlighted that one major reason for increasing crime is hunger, as millions of Nigerians are suffering due to various factors such as rising inflation and poor economic management.

“The economic reforms of the Tinubu administration have brought about untold hardships for Nigerians. Hunger is becoming an epidemic, and not many people can endure this situation,” he added.

Ibrahim argued that the country’s resources should be allocated to enhance the welfare of its citizens.

He emphasised that the government has yet to take effective action to address the hunger crisis and reduce the poverty level in Nigeria, insisting that it must improve its performance and get its priorities straight.
