The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South East), Mrs Chioma Nweze, has commended the Senate for passing the South East Development Commission Bill into law.
According to her, the passage of the bill was timely and essential for the proper integration of the South East in the political equation and scheme of things in the country.
Nweze made this statement on Friday.
She also noted that the bill will grease the wheels of development in the South East region.
The Bill aims to establish a Commission for the South East region, charged with responsibilities such as receiving and managing funds allocated by the Federal Government for the construction, reconstruction, and rehabilitation of roads, houses, and other infrastructural damages suffered by the region.
Additionally, it addresses the need to tackle ecological problems and any other related environmental or developmental challenges in the South-east states and related matters.
The statement partly reads, “We are particularly gratified by the action of the Senate under the leadership of Senator Godswill Akpabio and the concomitant passage of the bill by the House of Representatives earlier on. Both chambers deserve praise for answering the call of humanity and history and rising to the occasion.
It is also the desire and plea of South East people that the bill, when transmitted to Mr. President, will receive quick assent to enable the Commission to activate the full benefits it holds for the South Eastern people.”
According to her, the bill equally demonstrates the sincere commitment by both chambers of the National Assembly to address the plights of South Eastern people, as further supported by the remarks by Senate President as follows: “It’s a very important bill passed by this 10th Senate, this bill addresses all the fears of our brothers and sisters from the South East.
