President Bola Tinubu has commended the National Assembly for its approval of the State of Emergency in Rivers State, describing it as a patriotic decision that prioritises the welfare and security of the state’s residents.
In a statement issued on Thursday by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and other lawmakers for rising above partisan politics to “safeguard livelihoods, secure critical infrastructure, and restore democratic accountability.”
“The crisis in Rivers State was at a perilous tipping point, threatening the security of vital oil and gas installations and undermining the national economy,” the president said. “This emergency measure is a lifeline to stabilise the state and prevent further escalation.”

The National Assembly’s ratification of the emergency proclamation came after classified security briefings detailing concerns over governance paralysis, threats to federal economic assets, and a risk of widespread violence.
“Their decision exemplifies what our nation can achieve when unity of purpose and patriotism guide leadership,” Tinubu remarked.
With the six-month emergency period now in effect, the President is hopeful that the newly appointed Sole Administrator will play a central role in addressing systemic governance failures and facilitating dialogue among conflicting parties.
The Tinubu administration maintains that this measure will lay the foundation for long-term peace and stability.
While the emergency declaration had sparked debate among political stakeholders, the president reaffirmed his commitment to working with the National Assembly to ensure that Rivers State—and the entire nation—remains on a path towards economic resilience and equitable development.
“As a government, we remain steadfast in pursuing a safer, more prosperous Nigeria—one where every citizen’s potential is safeguarded and nurtured,” he said.
Tinubu expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their understanding and urged all stakeholders to support ongoing efforts to restore normality in Rivers State.
His administration has emphasised that the emergency rule is a necessary, albeit temporary, step towards restoring governance structures and securing national interests.
