Tinubu at 73: Presidential aide applauds interventions in education, youth empowerment

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Student Engagement, Hon. Sunday Asefon, has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to the development of education, describing it as a crucial step towards shaping the nation’s future, empowering young Nigerians, and ensuring a brighter tomorrow.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja to commemorate Tinubu’s 73rd birthday, Asefon highlighted the numerous achievements of the administration in the education sector.

He cited the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) as a key milestone, noting that within a short period, over 500,000 students had already applied for student loans, making higher education more accessible.

The presidential aide also pointed out the restoration of industrial peace and harmony in tertiary institutions, emphasising that no strikes had been recorded by academic staff unions since the administration took office, as the government continued efforts to address their concerns.

Asefon further noted that one of the significant initiatives of Tinubu’s administration was the removal of higher education institutions from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), restoring financial autonomy to universities in line with the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other unions, in line with global best practices.

“Your leadership continues to redefine education in Nigeria, turning promises into action and dreams into reality for millions of students,” he stated.

He also highlighted other key achievements, including the highest budgetary allocation to education, the establishment of new federal institutions—including universities in Kaduna, Ekiti, Ogun, and Rivers, as well as a Polytechnic in Abuja—expanding opportunities for higher education.

Additionally, Asefon commended the distribution of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to tertiary institutions and student bodies to provide affordable and eco-friendly transportation, as well as the introduction of the DOTS Education Policy, which focuses on data-driven reforms, teacher training, and skill development.

He further noted improvements in educational infrastructure through renovations and new construction to enhance the learning environment, as well as strategic funding and policy reforms advancing free and compulsory basic education.

He added that the approval of a National Youth Conference and the establishment of the Nigeria Youth Academy (NIYA) demonstrated the administration’s commitment to youth engagement and empowerment.
