Three men arraigned for assaulting medical doctor in Ogun

On Monday, three people were arraigned before a magistrate’s court sitting in the Isabo area of Abeokuta over an alleged assault on a medical doctor, Alexander Onochie, last Friday at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Aro.

Those docked were James Akode (57); Lekan Ajeigbe (35); and Rilwan Roheem (33).

The trio were brought before Magistrates’ Mrs D.O. Ogunbowale on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, assault, and unlawful damage.

The prosecution counsel, ASP Matthew Famuyiwa, informed the court that the trio committed the offence on May 17 at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Aro, Abeokuta.

Famuyiwa told the court that the defendants assaulted Onochie while performing his duty.

He explained that the defendants were relatives of a patient who came for treatment at the hospital.

Famuyiwa said, “The doctor, while attending to an emergency patient at the emergency ward, said that one of the defendants, Mr Akode, came into his office and pleaded for quick attention on the sick sibling he brought for treatment.

“The doctor told him to be patient, that he was attending to another emergency, and when he was through with the patient, he called on the next patient but no one came in

“On coming out of his office, he noticed there was nobody in the waiting room and when he stepped out, he saw the trio with others who conspired to assault him.”

The police prosecutor said the defendants damaged the side mirror of a Toyota Camry car owned by the medical doctor, valued at N20,000, and the car bumper, whose value was unknown at the time the matter was presented before the court.

He said that the action of the defendants might likely cause a breach of peace in the hospital environment, saying the offence contravened sections 516, 351, 451, and 249 of the criminal code laws of Ogun State 2006.

The Magistrates thereafter admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N200,000 each with two sureties in like sum, who must be registered bondmen with the Ogun State Judiciary.

She, however, adjourned the case until June 4 for further hearings.
