Eleven people, including three children, were killed in a tragic accident on Tuesday at Abule Osun bus stop along the Badagry Expressway in Lagos.
Three individuals, including two children, were fortunate to be rescued by emergency responders who were quickly dispatched to the scene.
The victims included three female passengers, four male passengers, two female children, and a male child.
Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary in charge of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the accident on Wednesday in a statement.
It was reported that the deceased and injured individuals were all passengers in a Toyota Sienna space bus, which collided with a stationary tipper on the road.
The bus had traveled from the Eastern part of the country and was en route to the park to drop off the passengers.
The LASEMA boss said “In response to distress calls received via the 767/112 Toll-Free Lines at 2307hrs, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, activated it’s Dolphin Response Team from Igando base.
“On arrival at the scene of the road traffic accident at Abule Osun, inward Iyana Iba, along Lagos-Badagry Expressway, it was discovered that a Toyota Sienna bus, registration number BDG 342 FS, laden to capacity with passengers from the Eastern part of the country was involved in a road accident with a parked SHACMAN truck, registration number unknown”.
He also continued that ” Further investigations revealed that the truck, which was laden with granite, was parked on the road shutting down about half of the carriage way, while the Toyota Sienna on top speed, unknowingly crashed into the parked truck from behind.
Ten people died instantly in the accident, and one of the survivors later passed away at the hospital where they were rushed.
The injured passengers were reportedly rescued and taken to a nearby hospital by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
