Dr Doyin Okupe, the former Director-General of the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign Organisation, has responded to criticisms and insults he has received for supporting President Bola Tinubu’s economic recovery plan.
In a statement issued on Monday in Lagos, Okupe criticised those attacking him as ignorant and politically naive.
Okupe, who previously served as a Presidential Spokesperson, expressed disappointment over the negative reactions he has faced on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter).
He described his critics as “political urchins” who lack a comprehensive understanding of the issues at hand.
He emphasised that Nigeria’s progress transcends any individual or political party, stating, “The Nigeria project belongs to all of us irrespective of the political party and political leader in power.”
Okupe called for a collective effort to advance the country, stressing that supporting leaders based on merit and constructive criticism is essential for a robust democracy.
Okupe also expressed regret over the behaviour of some young Nigerians who, in his view, lack historical perspective and respect for experience.
He defended his past support for Obi, noting that his actions were driven by personal conviction and a desire to contribute positively to Nigeria, despite personal sacrifices.
He added, “After elections, we must shield our swords, criticise government constructively, and patiently wait till the next election. That is the culture of true and enduring democracy.”
