Born on December 16th, 1962, in Otukpo, he embarked on an inspiring journey that led him to become an influential figure in architecture, civil service, and education. Early Life and Education
Sonny Echono’s educational journey commenced at St. Mary’s Primary School in Otukpo, where he exhibited early signs of leadership and academic excellence. He later moved on to St. Theresa’s and St. Murumba’s College in Jos, where he excelled both academically and in extracurricular activities, such as leading the Debating Society and Quiz Club. His commitment to excellence was evident when he graduated as the best student in the class of 1973-78, achieving a Division I in the West African School Certificate (WASC) Examination. Additionally, he showcased his sporting prowess in soccer, basketball, and volleyball.

A Passion for Architecture

Having initially considered studying abroad, Sonny’s path took a different turn after his father’s passing in 1978. He joined the Murtala College of Arts, Science, and Technology (MUCAST) in Makurdi for his ‘A’ Levels/IJMB and later pursued a degree in Architecture at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. His dedication and talent in the field were evident as he graduated with a BSc. (2nd Class Upper) in 1983 and an MSc. in 1985. His commitment to continuous improvement led him to excel in his studies, earning accolades such as the Best Life Project award and the Best-All-Round Performance in the Nigerian Institute of Architects Professional Practice Examination in 1989.

A Distinguished Civil Servant

Sonny Echono’s entry into the Federal Civil Service in 1987 marked the beginning of a notable career. Over the years, he took on various roles at the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, demonstrating exceptional leadership and dedication. His contributions ranged from serving as Secretary of Committees to leading crucial projects, showcasing his managerial acumen and commitment to public service. Additionally, he played an instrumental role in pioneering procurement reforms in Nigeria through his involvement with the Budget Monitoring and Price Intelligence Unit (BMPIU) or Due Process Office.

Education and Professional Growth

Echono’s thirst for knowledge and personal development drove him to attain additional qualifications, including a Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) from the University of Calabar, a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Benue State University, and an MSc in Procurement Management from the University of Turin, Italy. These achievements underscore his dedication to both professional and academic growth.

Leadership in Civil Service and Architecture

Throughout his 35 years of service, Sonny Echono has left an indelible mark on policy formulation, reform initiatives, and development projects within the Nigerian Civil Service and its agencies. He played a pivotal role in shaping policies related to housing, procurement, infrastructure, and education. His dedication to improving government projects’ implementation and enhancing various sectors earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues.

A Legacy of Leadership

Arc. Sunday Sylva Togo Echono’s leadership extended beyond civil service into the architectural community. His journey in the Nigerian Institute of Architects saw him rise from the position of Secretary of the Admissions Committee to become the 28th President of the Nigeria Institute of Architects from 2019 to 2021. He spearheaded initiatives aimed at advancing the architectural profession and fostering collaboration among architects.

Global Exposure and Expertise

Sonny Echono’s commitment to learning and improvement extended to international platforms. He attended numerous management courses and workshops at prestigious institutions worldwide, including those in the UK, USA, Japan, and Indonesia. His global exposure enriched his perspective and contributed to his multidimensional expertise.

Retirement and Continued Service

After a distinguished career, Sonny Echono retired as the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education in January 2022. However, his commitment to service did not waver. In March 2022, he took on the role of Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TetFund), where he continues to contribute to Nigeria’s education sector.
