Everyone has a memorable experience that leaves a lasting mark on their lives. In a chat with Mercy Ayankunle, these children share stories of one such unforgettable day and the impact it had on them.

Ajibola Israel, 12 years old

I can never forget the day I attended the Young Ministers Retreat (YMR) camp meeting at Redemption Camp, Lagos. It was my first time at a camp meeting, and it was an unforgettable experience. I went with my parents and siblings. The camp is big. I saw many people singing and clapping. I felt excited and a little nervous because I wasn’t sure of what to expect. I saw ministers like P. Daniel, Lawrence Oyor, Minister BBO and many others in person. We had prayer sessions and I learnt new songs. I would love to attend the camp meeting next time with my friends.

Olayemi Mary, 11 years old

The day I will never forget was the day my daddy bought me a little puppy. I was very happy. At first, my puppy was quiet and she sat at a spot. She was so tiny. But after some days, she started running around. That day, I named her Smart. I stayed outside playing with her till it was dark. Smart is now big and is my best friend. She runs to meet me any time I am back from school. I’m glad my daddy gave me Smart.

Egbedeyi Olaife, 10 years old

I remember the day I went to Lagos with my parents. It was during the New Year celebration. We visited my uncle and his family. I was glad to see my cousins and we ate together as a big family. I also made friends with their neighbours. What made that day special was our visit to the zoo. I saw lions and giraffes for the first time. The monkeys were funny and one of them attempted to take my popcorn from me. My uncle bought us meat pie and soft drinks and I took pictures with my daddy’s phone. That was my best New Year’s celebration ever.

Adepoju Daniel, 12 years old

That was the day I went to play football on a nearby field. The people we wanted to play with were older than us, but I was happy because I had my teammates with me. We started the match and the other team was playing hard. When I collected the ball, I dribbled past the first person, and then the second person, and even got to the goalkeeper. My teammates were already shouting ‘goal!’ but I missed it. Our fans were shouting too. I later scored the first goal for my team. The way I scored was so funny that everybody laughed and cheered. I felt great. That incident spurred my decision to be a footballer.

Aderinto Dorcas, 12 years old

I can never forget my tenth birthday party. I woke up that morning feeling happy. My parents had promised to get me something special. My family members, uncles, family friends and neighbours were all around to celebrate the day with me. What made it different from my other birthdays was the surprise I received. My friend took me by surprise. She brought me a cake! My mum also baked me another. I had two lovely birthday cakes at the end of the day.

I also received gifts like clothes, storybooks, school bags, and other beautiful things. We played games, danced to music, and took lots of pictures. We had much fun.

Egbedeyi Olaadura, 12 years old

That was last term when we went on an excursion in my school and we visited a museum at Cocoa House. I woke up early that day and was served breakfast by my mum. She also gave me money for snacks when I was leaving home. We went in our school bus and had some of our teachers with us. We sang and laughed in the bus. The museum is big. Among items displayed were artifacts like pots and clothes, and also pictures of people who lived in the olden days. I saw bones of big animals too. The tour guide explained many things to us. We were shown how people lit fire with stones in the past.
