The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB), has commenced a two-day validation workshop on the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) feasibility study aimed at boosting stable electricity supply in Nigeria.
TCN Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, while speaking at the event which runs from 8th to 9th June, 2026 in Abuja, said the BESS project was a timely and forward-looking intervention.
Represented by the General Manager, Engineering, Engineer Mojeed Akintola, the TCN chief said the project is designed to tackle system instability and strengthen grid balancing as Nigeria targets a more reliable electricity supply as he charged the participants to contribute positively to the workshop as part of efforts to find a lasting solution to Nigeria’s power sector.
Project’s lead consultant and AfDB representative, Professor Tajudeen Sikiru, emphasised the need for proper scrutiny of the policy documents under review. According to him, the validation process is important while expressing hope that outcome of the workshop will go a long way in shaping the future of Nigeria’s electricity sector.

The BESS, according to the organisers, will not only provide critical support for power transmission operations by storing excess electricity and releasing it when demand rises but will also promote efficiency and reliability within the national grid.
