Tax reform bills: Senator Ekong vows to protect Akwa Ibom’s interests

Senator Dr. Ekong Sampson, representing the Akwa Ibom South (Eket) Senatorial District, has reassured his constituents that the Nigerian Senate will rigorously examine the proposed tax reform bill to safeguard Akwa Ibom’s interests.

Speaking at the Dinner Night and unveiling of the Correspondents’ Chapel Compendium Magazine titled The Critique in Uyo, Senator Sampson emphasized the significance of public scrutiny and fairness in the legislative process.

He raised concerns about the impact of the tax reform on Akwa Ibom, particularly in relation to oil companies operating in the state but paying taxes to other regions.

“We will spare no effort to ensure that Akwa Ibom’s interests are protected,” he declared, noting that the state’s three senators are united in advocating for its cause during deliberations on the bill.

The event, themed “Ethical Issues: AI and Digital Journalism in the 21st Century,” also featured insightful discussions on the changing media landscape.

Dr. Emmanuel Abraham, Chairman of Topfaith Group of Institutions, emphasized the need for journalists to combine artificial intelligence with original intelligence to enhance their reporting while maintaining ethical standards in the digital age.

The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ini Ememobong, commended the Correspondents’ Chapel for its professionalism and valuable contributions to governance.

He assured the gathering of Governor Umo Eno’s recognition of their work. Comrade Bassey Anthony, Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, highlighted the importance of the annual Chapel Week, which serves as a key platform for training members and showcasing their dedication to reporting Akwa Ibom’s activities.
