Lagos based lifestyle connoisseur, philanthropist and founder/CEO of The Sunky O Lifestyle Company, Ojulari Olasunkanmi popularly known as ‘Sunky O’, has launched educational and learning materials charity drive.
The accountant turned brand strategist and lifestyle professional revealed his plans to initiate an essential educational project tagged “BACK TO SCHOOL DRIVE”. He made this known during the official launch of the Sunky O Lifestyle Company.
Speaking to Tribune Online, he says these days as most parents send their kids to private schools, a lot of public schools are plagued by a low turnout of pupils during registration, because of a lack of qualified teachers, teaching aids, books, desks and other essential learning materials. And as private schools pay better than public schools, most public schools lack qualified teachers and are short on staff.
While he cannot help with teachers, Sunky believes he can donate educational and learning materials and so, has enlisted the help of some friends & corporate clients to raise funds through donations to purchase some of these materials for distribution to select public schools.
Olasunkanmi says the aim of the initiative is to provide teaching aids for teachers, educational and learning essentials for 50 – 100 pupils, and students in public primary schools in and around Lagos state.
“I see this as my personal social responsibility project, and a way of supporting these underfunded, under-equipped schools and encouraging both the teachers and students. “These young ones are the leaders of tomorrow and education is a key ingredient in developing and preparing them for the future” Sunky said.
He lamented further, “it is a pity that most public schools are underfunded and lack some basic amenities and infrastructures so this initiative is a means of giving back and supporting the government. “Obviously, if we as citizens wait on the government to do everything, then things will continue getting worse. Government alone cannot fund schools, infrastructure or development, so it falls on us citizens in the private sector; corporate and individuals to help whenever and however we can to ameliorate the plight of these public schools by providing an enabling environment for the pupils.
Ojulari called for donations in materials, resources and/or cash, from friends, clients and well-meaning Nigerians in support of his noble initiative. Whatever is realized from the drive will be used to make donations of teaching aids for the teachers and essential learning tools like text & exercise books and toiletries to some select public primary schools around Lagos State.
