The Vice Chancellor of Summit University, Professor Musa Aibinu, has emphasized the importance of equipping journalism students with Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills to remain relevant in the evolving media landscape.
He made this call during a seminar organized by the Department of Mass Communication, Lens Polytechnic, Offa, titled “Exploring the Role of AI in the New Media: Benefits and Challenges.”
Professor Aibinu highlighted how AI has transformed journalism, enhancing processes such as news framing, writing, editing, production, and multimedia content creation.
He advised students to combine AI knowledge and tools with natural intelligence to tackle complex problems effectively.
The event featured the Proprietor of Lens Polytechnic, Dr. Azeez Yisa, Director of Strategic Planning, Mr. Fatai Azeez, staff, and students.
Speaking on the theme, Professor Aibinu underscored the need for journalists to acquire critical skills to harness AI effectively.

These include creativity, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, decision-making, leadership, interpersonal communication, and adaptability to change.
He commended the Polytechnic for its forward-thinking initiative and praised the efforts of the HND II Mass Communication students in organizing the seminar.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Azeez Yisa, the Proprietor of Lens Polytechnic, reiterated the institution’s commitment to equipping students with relevant skills for the labor market.
He emphasized the growing importance of AI in mass communication and reaffirmed the Polytechnic’s dedication to following global trends to enhance student preparedness.
Mr. Abdulhakeem Olarinoye also lauded the guest speaker for his insightful presentation and applauded the Polytechnic management for fostering an environment conducive to academic excellence.
The Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Mrs. Kehinde Adeniran, expressed gratitude to the management for its consistent support and thanked Professor Aibinu for his enlightening session. She reaffirmed the department’s commitment to preparing students for future challenges in the media industry.
