Strike: We’re fully compliant — UNILAG SSANU, NASU

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) branch of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities(SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) have said they were fully compliance with the directive of their leadership at the national level to join others to embark on one-week warning strike nationwide from Monday.

The acting chairman of SSANU of the branch, Mr Gbenga Adenaiya, told Nigerian Tribune on Wednesday that members of the two unions in response to the directive had since Monday down tools.
He described their participation in the strike at the branch as 100 per cent compliance.

He explained that they adopted different modalities each day since Monday to express their grievances against the Federal Government for its non-payment of their four months’ withheld salaries.

He said on Monday, they went round the offices to sensitise and mobilise their members to stay off duties and on Tuesday, they went round to monitor and enforce compliance.

“And today (Wednesday) we went to protest at the main gate where we made our grievances known again to the members of the public.

“We were there between 7.00 am and 9.00 am.

“While there, we closed one gate to the traffic and left the second gate open for people and vehicular traffic as we know that we have some workers in the system particularly lecturers, who are not on strike.

“So, tomorrow by the grace of God, we will adopt another dimension. And that is how will do till Friday unless we receive a directive to discontinue the exercise from the leaders.

“All we want is for the Federal Government to pay us without further delay, our four months withheld salaries.”

Meanwhile, the academic activities were ongoing in the campus as lecturers are at work and even conducting the first-semester examination for the students.

The chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) of the branch, Prof Kayode Adebayo, confirmed this to Nigerian Tribune on Wednesday.

He said interestingly, most students had already finished their exams and had gone home while the few who remained and mostly from the Faculty of Education would done with theirs in few days time.

According to him, lecturers are the ones moderating and supervising the exams and we are almost finished with the exercise.

When asked about light and water supply as well as sweeping of the classrooms and offices, he said the university does not have any issue with those concerns.
